Carnaval des Animeaux –‘Carnival Of The Animals’, in English—features arrangements of themes from the musical suite of the same name by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The themes are derived from Saint-Saëns’ own humorous musical interpretations of each animal’s temperament and mannerisms.

Mvt. 1: Introduction and the Lion's Royal March opens with the famous trill in the woodwinds and expands to a glorious tutti carnival theme. Afterward, the royal march theme moves throughout the ensemble and accelerates to an exciting finish.

Mvt. 2: The Swan features the most famous theme of the original suite as a lyrical flute solo. It dissolves into a delicate woodwind feature before growing through the entire ensemble for a truly special moment.

Mvt. 3: Cuckoo in the Woods segues immediately from the previous movement, and allows for a flashy percussion feature while capturing the comedy of the cuckoo bird’s call.

Mvt. 4: Aquarium, Elephant, and Finale closes the show with memorable melodies and moments from the original suite. A descent into the aquarium waters is followed by an ambling procession by a herd of elephants. The carnival theme makes a final return and joyously ends the show.
